(Well, a few days late but close.) This month marks the 18th anniversary of the introduction of the Amiga at New York's Lincoln Center in a gala affair that featured artist Andy Warhol doing live artwork with singer Deborah Harry. The actual date was July 23. In the words of the song, "What a long, strange, trip it's been". This month nearly saw the rebirth of the Amiga, which would have been almost poetic at its 18th birtday - the coming of age birthday in many places of the world. But it's not quite that way. The decision to demonstrate Amiga OS at AmiWest, while very significant, is not exactly the rebirth we need. OS4 in native mode on an Amiga One, and in the stores or on the web for people to buy ... that will be the rebirth event. Still, hearty congratulations are due to all who've worked on that project and gotten it to this significant milestone. Now it's time to take another deep breath, finish the job, then stand up and take applause from all quarters. Our plans at "Amiga Update" do include having an exclusive report for you from AmiWest, but we don't have it available at this time. One of the advantages of the way we publish AU is we can send you this issue covering July news in general, then follow up with a show report once it's available. This also gives the writer the time she needs to do the job without rushing. We hope you enjoy this issue, and are looking forward with us to the next 18 years of Amiga. Brad Webb, Editor =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- B I L L M C E W E N H A D T O M I S S A M I W E S T AmigaWest Update - July 19, 2003 Welcome to AmiWest 2003! This is another opportunity for the the Amiga community and the rest of the world to see AmigaOS 4.0 demonstrated for the first time. That is correct, Amiga Operating System Version 4.0, along with the AmigaOne hardware, is a giant step forward for Amiga users. I look forward to hearing or reading your thoughts and opinions on these products. We are very pleased with the progress and believe that you will like the demonstration at AmiWest and further enjoy the AmigaOS 4 experience once the product is released. Regrettably, my plans have changed and I will not be attending AmiWest this year. I have informed the organizers of AmiWest and they were very understanding. However, in my absence, Amiga will be well-represented at the event. I hope that you all enjoy AmiWest. I will miss being there, as AmiWest holds a very special place in my heart in regard to my affiliation with Amiga and the community. I wish you all a very enjoyable time in Sacramento. God Bless, Bill McEwen President/CEO Amiga, Inc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- F L E E C Y O N T H E O S 4 T O U R {We thought those of you who didn't see this over at AmigaWorld Portal would find it interesting. This was taken from the question and answer sessions regularly run on that site. Brad} 4) hnl_dk: What do you think of the outcome, of the "OS4.0 on tour 2003" until now? Fleecy: I think it has been very good. The fact that dealers and user groups worked together to organise it is a testament to the power of the Amiga community, where everything doesn't have to be driven by the centre. Jurgen and the others have done a great job and it has started some lively debate about the new default interface and praise for many of the new graphical features. That alone has caused a huge increase in requests for information and registrations of interest from around the world. For those who have stood fast through all the rumours about how it will never happen, then it will never work, it must be giving them a good feeling to see that their trust was not misplaced. The power of Amiga is about getting through the bad times as well as the good times and the supporters, the AmigaOS4.0 team and the community in general has come into its own and from here on, things will accelerate towards launch and rebirth of the platform. http://amigaworld.net/ http://www.amiga.dk/os4ontour/amigaos4tour_eng.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- H E R E ' S A N U P C O M I N G T O U R E V E N T 9th August from 13:00 to 17:00 at Syvstjerneskolen in Værløse, Denmark. Finally! A bit delayed the updated Website on AmiATLAS 6 is taking off. The new address is: amiatlas http://www.amiatlas.net The old address is naturally valid for a transitional period! First off, the languages French and Italian have been dropped. The demand was simply too small to justify the additional work. Which of course isn't to say that this might not change again in the future... Naturally the site was created on the Amiga without any special HTML tools. Layout tests were done exclusively with IBrowse2.3, as there isn't anything else available. If you find errors or have ideas, go on, be so kind and drop me a line! Finally there is a news page with new items about the whole project beside the newsletter. Here you will find all the changes regarding the Website itself, the main program or map updates. And of course anything else that might crop up. Likewise the list of features has been expanded as there were a great many requests for this. Furthermore there are now more and most notably big screenshots! More will follow over time. Especially regarding the upcoming special AmigaOS4 version with ReAction GUI and XML features! The big improvement however is a user forum and guest book which will be activated in a couple of days. Now all people interested in AmiATLAS and even more registered cutomers can enter their ideas and wishes here. Or ask for help, should the usual support not suffice. And now for all the thrifty ones among the Amiga friends: Again the prices have been reduced a little! This will however change again with the OS4 version at the latest!!! Of course there are also a couple of updates to be announced! Thus many hours of elaborate work have once more been spent by Manfred Rohde on the following maps: - Germany - France - BeNeLux - Denmark - Scandinavia (Sweden and Norway, new map of Finland about to follow) The road network, in particular of the autobahns especially in Germany, is more up to date than many a allegedly cutting-edge PC routing software! In a couple of days the archives will go out to all those customers who have newly registered in reaction to the most recent news announcement. Have fun with the new Website and of course also with the map updates! 26-Jul-2003 AmiATLAS Appeal Surely many a user has been annoyed with some destination, a location or an attraction in the near vicinity or even one's own place of residence not being included or even being incorrectly contained in one of AmiATLAS' maps?! But that has never really been a real problem! After all, you have always been able to include custom additions, whatever they may be! Such a thing cannot easily be said of PC routing software... Now, in order to not only enjoy your additions alone or maybe even to not have to make the effort at all, why not let all users share them??? Thus here the appeal to all new and long-time users of AmiATLAS: Please notify us of your wishes, of what is still missing in the maps or has to be changed because of faulty entries. Also informational items about places or attractions are most welcome! We are looking forward to any useful eMails in this regard to the following address: There is even a little surprise for all practical and implemented pieces of information... Thanks to all Amiga users for your help! ******************************************************* AmiATLAS Development Team, Gerd Frank, maintainer Manfred Rohde, mapmaster http://www.amiatlas.net ******************************************************* ---------------------------------------------------------------------- E L B O X ' S " M E D I A T O R L I G H T " 11 July 2003 Elbox Computer, the leading manufacturer of hardware for Amiga computers, the company that introduced the PCI standard to Amiga computers, is proud to announce expansion of the MEDIATOR busboard product line with the new Mediator model for Amiga 1200 computers: the Mediator PCI 1200 LT. If there'd been more news this month, perhaps we woudn't have included it. However, it's likely of interest to many readers, and it was Commodore, after all, that put Amiga on the market. On the other hand, how many people know the Amiga's history well enough to understand that the Amiga can best be considered a "grown up" Atari 800, while it was the Atari ST that was in many ways a "grown up" Commodore 64? It sometimes was hard to tell who was who and what was what among the companies and the people involved in the early days. Brad} Global re-launch of COMMODORE by TULIP COMPUTERS N.V. and IRONSTONE PARTNERS LIMITED Amersfoort, July 11, 2003 Today Tulip Computers NV (Tulip) and Ironstone Partners Ltd. (Ironstone) signed a licence agreement for a partnership, which is a major step in the global re-launch of the Commodore brand name. Tulip will receive a license fee for all Commodore C64 products delivered by Ironstone, installed on all computer brands using the Microsoft or any other operating system and all Commodore 64 branded products. In addition, Tulip will receive a license fee over the revenue from software downloads, subscriptions and advertising. Even today there is still an extensive group of about 6 million loyal Commodore users and enthusiasts around the world. This community is currently spread over hundreds of unofficial websites. The community craves acknowledgement and authenticity from the true Commodore C64 brand. Tulip is the owner of the brand name Commodore. Through this partnership Tulip grants to Ironstone the exclusive rights to exploit the official Commodore C64 web-portal and use of the Commodore 64 brand name. Ironstone and Tulip invite the Commodore community to join the official Commodore C64 web-portal. Currently there are about 300 commercial websites that use the name Commodore or Commodore 64 without having a license from Tulip. Tulip will not allow unauthorised use of the Commodore brand. In this partnership, Ironstone will create the official Commodore C64 games and community portal designed to focus and harness the power of the Commodore C64 user base and to efficiently provide the services required by these individuals for a fee. The founders of Ironstone are experienced and successful, in previous similar projects Ironstone achieved a subscriber to pay subscriber conversion rate that was unparalleled in the Internet space. The main objective of the Ironstone official C64 portal is to unite this massive global fan base of passionate enthusiasts. Through its web portal, Ironstone will market the official C64 emulator in various software and hardware formats. The games offered by the Ironstone web-portal will include the famous `classic' C64 games as well as exciting new games and will also sell its Commodore-branded products through the site. Tulip will get full access to the estimated 6 million users and will also sell its Commodore branded products through this portal. Tulip will introduce, the upcoming months, new hardware products under the Commodore brand name, being able to use the C64 emulator. According to Bjorn Bruggeman, Brand Manager Commodore: "Through strategic partnerships we're creating a web of Commodore partner companies. Each partner, or licensee, is selected on his unique expertise and will focus on a specific market segment within the Commodore strategy. The synergy advantages are huge. The license agreement with Ironstone is an important step in this process and will enable Tulip to enter a complete new era with almost unlimited e-commerce opportunities. " Darren Melbourne, Creative Director, Ironstone Partners commented, " The license deal with Tulip is a huge breakthrough for the millions of C64 enthusiasts and retro gamers around the world who are still loyal to this incredible games system. Ironstone is committed to bringing this technology and games library back to prominence on every platform available to us."
