Short: Dark Forces ZZ9000 RTG/060 fix Author: The Force Engine team, BSzili (Amiga port), Xanxi (ZZ9000/68060 optimizations) Uploader: Xanxi - hassani hakim gmail com Type: game/shoot Version: 1.0 Requires: game/shoot/tfe-darkforces.lha; 68060+FPU; original Dark Forces data Architecture: m68k-amigaos >= 3.0.0 Dark Forces ZZ9000 Fix 1.0 =========================== The Amiga port of The Force Engine runs Dark Forces on classic Amiga systems, but performance on the ZZ9000 RTG card was found to be unexpectedly low compared with other RTG configurations. Investigation showed that an important part of the slowdown was caused by the Amiga RTG presentation path. The renderer was calling ChangeScreenBuffer() even when rendering directly to the visible CyberGraphX/RTG bitmap. On ZZ9000 this added a large and unnecessary display overhead. This release fixes that path: - CyberGraphX/RTG rendering now writes directly to the visible bitmap without performing the unnecessary screen-buffer flip. - The original double-buffered presentation path is retained for native/C2P output. - Additional 68060-specific optimizations are included in the RClassic_Fixed wall renderer. Test system: Amiga 4000 CyberStorm MK2 68060 @ 50 MHz ZZ9000 RTG RClassic_Fixed renderer 320x200 On this machine, the previous Amiga build typically ran at around 9-10 fps in SECBASE. With these optimizations, performance is approximately 13-23 fps, depending on the scene. SECBASE was completed successfully using the release executable and the game is now very playable on this configuration. This package is NOT a complete Dark Forces distribution. It contains a replacement TheForceEngine.060 executable for an existing Amiga installation of The Force Engine / Dark Forces. The original Dark Forces game data is required and is not included. Installation ------------ Copy: TheForceEngine.060 over the existing 68060 executable in your Amiga The Force Engine installation. Keeping a backup of the previous executable is recommended. Source ------ The optimizations have been submitted upstream here: https://github.com/BSzili/TheForceEngine/pull/1 Source commit used for the optimized files: 7ee22e8bf7e4257751f61b66939cf2f8a53fd4dd The source/rebuild package included with this release contains the corresponding changes required to reproduce this build.
