MIDIKeys is a small virtual MIDI keyboard and test controller for
AmigaOS using Commodore's CAMD MIDI system.

It turns the Amiga computer keyboard into a simple musical keyboard
and sends standard MIDI events to a configurable CAMD cluster.

MIDIKeys can be used with software MIDI synthesizers such as XXMIDI
or ZZMIDI, other CAMD-compatible software, or external MIDI hardware.

MIDIKeys generates MIDI data only. It does not generate audio itself.


REQUIREMENTS

- 68000 or better


TESTED ON
---------

MIDIKeys 1.0 has been successfully tested on:

- Amiga 600, 68000, AmigaOS 2.04
- Amiga 4000, 68060, AmigaOS 3.1
- Amiga 1200 with Vampire, AmigaOS 3.1
- Amiga 1200 with PiStorm32 Lite, AmigaOS 3.1
- UAE, AmigaOS 3.1

External MIDI output has also been successfully tested with a
Roland SC-55 hardware synthesizer.


INSTALLATION
------------

Copy MIDIKeys anywhere you like.

It can be started from Workbench or from Shell.

By default MIDIKeys sends MIDI data to the CAMD cluster:

    out.0

From Shell, another cluster can be selected by giving its name as
the first argument, for example:

    MIDIKeys out.1

From Workbench, use the ToolType:

    CLUSTER=out.0

or for example:

    CLUSTER=out.1

If no cluster is specified, out.0 is used.


KEYBOARD
--------

MIDIKeys uses RAWKEY events and therefore maps PHYSICAL keyboard
positions rather than translated characters.

This means that the musical key positions remain the same on
different keyboard layouts, although the printed key labels may
differ.

CONTROLS
--------

F1 / F2       Octave down / up
F3 / F4       Velocity down / up
F5 / F6       Program down / up
F7 / F8       Modulation down / up
F9 / F10      Pitch bend down / up
SPACE         Sustain pedal while held
DEL           Panic / all notes off
ESC           Quit

Pitch bend returns to centre when F9 or F10 is released.

SPACE behaves like a MIDI sustain pedal:
pressing it sends Sustain On (CC64=127), and releasing it sends
Sustain Off (CC64=0).


NOTES
-----

MIDIKeys sends standard MIDI messages through CAMD. The actual sound,
available instruments, pitch bend range and response to MIDI
controllers depend on the receiving synthesizer.

Because the musical keyboard uses physical RAWKEY positions, the
mapping is intentionally independent of the selected Amiga keyboard
layout.

Some Amiga keyboards may have hardware rollover limitations when
several computer keys are held simultaneously.
