AmiPCEngine is a PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 emulator for AGA Amigas, by
Juan Antonio Gomez Galvez and z00p, in 68020+ assembly. It plays HuCard games
(.pce files). It takes over the machine while a game runs and drives
the Amiga's custom chips directly, or a Picasso96 (RTG) screen.
History
-------
Juan began AmiPC-Engine about 1997; a first version was "abandoned due
the Amiga AGA limitations". Version 0.1 followed in 2011, and the
preview 0.3 on Aminet on 30 June 2020 (misc/emu/amipc-engine.lha, 4 of
6 sound channels, one sprite palette). His later version 0.5 (June
2021) was never released. In 2026 Juan sent his sources. This community
update, released with his permission, is built from them and finishes
what he started: all 6 sound channels with DDA samples, every sprite palette
on an RTG screen, and full speed on an A1200 with a PiStorm. His
v0.3 stays on Aminet as it is.
Requirements
------------
- An AGA Amiga with a 68020 or better, AmigaOS 3.0 or later.
- Full speed was measured on an A1200 with a PiStorm (RTG screen). A
68030/50 was tested in WinUAE only and plays below full speed.
- RTG icon: Picasso96 and a 16-bit screen mode. Without them it falls
back to the AGA screen.
Installation
------------
Unpack the archive anywhere. Start AmiPCEngine (AGA video output) or
AmiPCEngine RTG (Picasso96 screen, ToolType RTG). Choose Insert, pick a
.pce file in the Homebrew drawer or anywhere else, then Power ON. Esc
returns to the menu. See ReadMe.txt in the drawer for the keys and
pads (keyboard, Amiga joystick, CD32 pad).
No games are included. You need HuCard images of your own, copies you
may legally have.
Limits
------
Not all games work. Not supported: CD-ROM games, SuperGrafx, the
2.5 MB mapper of Street Fighter II' Champion Edition, Populous's card
RAM, backup RAM saves. Sound: 6 PSG channels on the Amiga's 4, the
loudest four at each frame. AGA: one sprite palette shared by all
sprites. Tested by us on an A1200 with a PiStorm (RTG mostly, AGA
less) and in WinUAE. Not tested on a real 68030/040/060 card or ECS.
The full list is in ReadMe.txt.
