               The sample-converter Pro14bit beta.
Made by Kjetil S Matheussen 1996.
                      Works on all amigas.

As you probably know, the Pro14bit program converts
a 16 bit raw sample into two 8 bits raw samples. The point is,
when you play this two samples simultaniously in a
music-program (such as protracker), you actually hear
a 14 bit sample! And yes, it works. No joke.

The conversion is probably not done correctly (it's only
a beta-version), so you will not get the ultimate sample
quality. But anyway, the difference in sound-quality is
quite huge (as I see it) when you do this. So it's not
a vaste of time.

The input format are raw, 16 bit, mono, signed, Intel
word-format (XINU)).

The output format are normal raw 8 bits samples for
the 680x0. Just load them in to your amiga-program, and
use it. If you load the samples in to a intel-machine
(to screamtracker, for example, which only support
8 bits samples), you probably have to swap the byte
order afterwards or something. Please allso note that
the result will differ from soundcard to soundcard.
(But it works okey on the paula though.)

Eksample on how to convert a 16 bit sample (such as .wav):

Amisox <infile> -t .raw -s -w -x ram:sample.raw
Pro14bit ram:sample.raw <outfile>
delete ram:sample.raw

(The <infile> can be at any format that Amisox supports.)
You will now have two files called <outfile>.raw8 and
<outfile>.raw6. Load them into protracker. Set the
volume of <outfile>.raw8 to 64, and the volume
of <outfile>.raw6 to 01. Play both samples
simultaniously at the same channel at the same
pitch. And Voila!

Allso, try to turn off the <outfile>.raw6, to hear
the difference.

If you don't have, or don't want to use Amisox
(its quite slow, you know), you can do the conversion
like this: "Pro14bit <infile> <outfile>", where
<infile> is a .wav-file.

This will work fine, but there will be a
click-noice at the beginning of the samples.
You can just cut them away manually.

Tips: If you save .raw 16 bit sample in
Fasttracker on the pc, you will have
a sample with the right format.
