Amiga port of the "file" UNIX app. It identifies the type of a file by
inspecting its contents rather than trusting its name or filenote. It
recognises several thousand formats, from Amiga hunk executables and IFF
containers through to modern archive, image, audio and document types.

This is a port of the standard Unix file(1), version 5.48. Native binaries
are included for AmigaOS 3 (68k), AmigaOS 4 (PPC) and MorphOS (PPC).


Installation

    Copy the contents of the C/ directory for your system to C:, e.g. on
    AmigaOS 3:

        copy file/AmigaOS3/C/#? C:

    Both the "file" command and its magic database "magic.mgc" belong in C:.
    The command looks for the database next to itself, so keeping them
    together is all that is required.


Usage

    file <name>            identify one or more files
    file -i <name>         print a MIME type instead of a description
    file -b <name>         omit the filename from the output
    file --help            full option list

    Examples:

        1> file C:file
        C:file: AmigaOS loadseg()ble executable/binary

        1> file -i Work:Pictures/photo.jpg
        Work:Pictures/photo.jpg: image/jpeg


Notes

    Compressed-file inspection using external decompressors is not available:
    AmigaOS provides no sigaction(), and clib2 no pipe(), so that code path is
    compiled out. Reading compressed files directly is unaffected.

    The developer SDK (static libmagic.a libraries and magic.h) is distributed
    separately as magic.lha.
